Research methodology is the backbone of any academic study. It defines how you gather, analyze, and interpret data — and it is the section that examiners scrutinize most rigorously. What Research Methodology Actually Means
Students frequently confuse research methodology with research methods. Methodology is the overarching framework and philosophical rationale behind your approach. Methods are the specific tools and techniques you employ within that framework. Your methodology chapter must explain not just what you did, but why it was the most appropriate approach for your research questions.
The Research Paradigm: Where to Start
Before selecting a methodology, you must understand and position yourself within a research paradigm. The three dominant paradigms in academic research are positivism, interpretivism, and critical realism.
Positivism holds that reality is objective and measurable. It aligns with quantitative methods and the belief that research can produce generalizable, law-like findings. Surveys, experiments, and statistical analyses fall within this tradition.
Interpretivism holds that reality is socially constructed and context-dependent. It aligns with qualitative methods and the belief that understanding human experience requires deep engagement with meaning. Interviews, focus groups, and ethnography fall within this tradition.

Quantitative Research Design

When choosing a quantitative approach, you must carefully consider your sampling strategy. Probability sampling — including simple random, stratified, and cluster sampling — allows you to make statistical inferences about a larger population. Non-probability sampling, while less rigorous statistically, is sometimes appropriate given practical constraints.
Data collection instruments must be valid and reliable. Validity refers to whether the instrument measures what it claims to measure. Reliability refers to its consistency across repeated measurements. Using established, validated scales from prior research strengthens your methodology considerably.
Qualitative Research Design
Qualitative methodology is appropriate when your research seeks to understand experiences, perspectives, processes, or meanings that cannot be reduced to numbers. Common designs include phenomenology, grounded theory, case study, and narrative research.
Phenomenology explores the lived experience of a phenomenon from the participants' perspective. Grounded theory generates theoretical explanations from systematically collected and analyzed data. Case study provides an in-depth examination of a bounded system. Narrative research explores how individuals construct meaning through storytelling.
Sampling in qualitative research is purposive rather than random. You select participants who can provide rich, relevant data — not those who are statistically representative. Sample sizes are typically smaller, but data collection is deeper.
Mixed Methods Research
Mixed methods combines quantitative and qualitative approaches, either sequentially or concurrently. A sequential explanatory design collects quantitative data first, then uses qualitative data to explain or elaborate on the findings. A sequential exploratory design collects qualitative data first, then uses quantitative data to test or generalize those findings.
Mixed methods requires more resources and expertise but can provide a more complete picture of complex research phenomena.
Justifying Your Methodology
The strongest methodology chapters do not merely describe an approach — they defend it. For every methodological choice, explain why it is superior to the alternatives given your specific research context. Engage directly with the limitations of your chosen approach and explain how you will mitigate them.
Drawing on established methodological literature — such as Creswell, Bryman, or Saunders — to support your choices signals academic maturity and thoroughness.
Ethical Considerations
No methodology chapter is complete without addressing research ethics. Discuss how you obtained informed consent, protected participant confidentiality, minimized potential harm, and complied with your institution's ethical review requirements. Ethical rigor is not a formality — it is a fundamental component of credible research.
